MEN'S HOOPS ROUND TWO WITH UTAH STATE HAPPENS WEDNESDAY
The San José State men's basketball team faces Utah State Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. in the Event Center. It will be the second meeting of the year with the Aggies, who defeated the Spartans 61-33 back on December 31, 2014 in Logan, Utah. Wednesday night's game will be the first of four straight televised home games for the Spartans. The game will be shown on ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain (see channel listings below). WYOMING PULLS AWAY FOR 77-60 WIN OVER SJSU
Rashad Muhammad scored 23 points, and Jaleel Williams knocked down four threes, but it wasn't enough to hold off Wyoming in a 77-60 loss last Saturday. Josh Adams exploded for a season-high 26 points to lead Wyoming. Muhammad scored 17 of his 23 in the first half when he was 5-of-11 from the floor while the rest of the team was a combined 4-of-15.
RASHAD DOING WHAT HE DOES BEST
Rashad Muhammad showed everyone how quickly he can turn a game around when he scored 13 straight points for the Spartans in a matter of 2:19 during the first half of the Wyoming game. His burst included three consecutive hits from downtown. His points were part of a run, which cut Wyoming's lead in half from 12 to six. Muhammad also showed aggressiveness on the boards grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds.
WILLIAMS ALSO LIKES THE 3-BALL
Jaleel Williams tied a season-high when he knocked down four three pointers in the game against Wyoming. He has now hit at least two three pointers in the Spartans' last four games.
TURNOVERS LIMITED AGAINST WYOMING
San José State turned the ball over nine times against Wyoming on Saturday. It was the first time in the last nine games that the team has limited its turnovers to a single-digit total. The last time it happened was against the same Cowboys team back on January 3 when the Spartans had a season-low, five turnovers. SJSU averages 14.3 turnovers per game in 2014-15.
A DIFFERENT TEAM THIS TIME AROUND
The last time these teams met earlier this season on December 31, 2014, San José State had a much different look than it will on Wednesday. The Spartans were down to seven players that night, including Andrew Vollert who was borrowed from the football team. Utah State defeated SJSU that night 61-33 in what was the conference opener for both teams. Since then, Vollert's stint ended, and Rashad Muhammad and Jaleel Williams returned from suspension for the next game on January 3. Those two have led the team in scoring since their return at 14.4 points per game for Muhammad and 10.5 per game for Williams.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST UTAH STATE
San José State's last victory over Utah State was February 18, 2008. Since then, USU has won 15 straight and are 21-1 versus SJSU dating back to the 2005-06 season. The all-time series stands in the Aggies' favor 54-21.
A SOPHOMORE IS CLIMBING THE ALL-TIME RANKS
Sophomore guard Rashad Muhammad has made 119 threes in his young career as a Spartan. The mark ranks him eighth among SJSU's career-leaders for made threes. He is four makes away from taking sole possession of fifth all time. Tim Pierce (2007-09) tops San José State's all-time list with 153 cashed three-point shots.
MUHAMMAD CONTINUES TO FIND DOUBLE-FIGURES
Rashad Muhammad has finished 13 of his last 14 games in double-figures scoring and is averaging 15.4 points per contest during that stretch. His season-high 26 points came on the road at Air Force on January 10.
FOUR OF THE LAST SIX WILL TAKE PLACE AT HOME
Six games remain for the Spartans this season, four of which will be played in front of the home crowd. Following the matchups with Utah State and San Diego State this week, Boise State and UNLV will be in The Event Center for the final two games of the year. SJSU LETS NEVADA SQUEAK BY, 60-57
A few turnovers and missed opportunities during crunch time kept the Spartans from winning their first game in MW play this season in a tight, 60-57, loss to Nevada on February 7. SJSU hit 16 of their first 20 free throws in the game, but missed four in the final minute of the game. San José State hung around in the first half despite the Wolf Pack having more offensive rebounds (14) than total rebounds for the Spartans (11). Darryl Gaynor II had a season-high 25 points to lead the Spartans. AJ West scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in only 23 minutes to Nevada.
GAYNOR DROPS SEASON-HIGH 25 ON NEVADA
Freshman guard Darryl Gaynor II had his best game of the season against Nevada with a season-high 25 points on 7-of-14 shooting. He was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line and achieved another season-best with seven rebounds. Gaynor has led the way scoring in five games this season.
Brandon Mitchell A TOP-10 REBOUNDER IN MW PLAY
Sophomore forward Brandon Mitchell is in the top-10 for his 6.0 rebounds per game during MW play and his 1.9 offensive rebounds per MW game also ranks inside the conference's top-10.
