San Antonio, Texas ----- Freshman Morgan McCormick set a school record in a preliminary heat of the 200 individual medley as San Jose State University moved into ninth place after the second day of the 2015 Mountain West Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
McCormick swam a 2:00.41 time in her preliminary race earning NCAA Championship "B" cut status. Her record-setting swim bettered the previous San Jose State mark of 2:01.08 set by Julia Craddock at the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Championship. The freshman from Golden, Colo., finished seventh in the 200 IM championship final at 2:01.90.
Freshman diver Cari Reiswig from Galt, Calif., scored for the Spartans the second night in a row with her fifth place finish in the 3-meter event. On the opening night of the championships, she was fourth in the 1-meter dive.
"We're very pleased with Cari's performance. She is the first diver to score for us at a Mountain West meet," said San Jose State coach Sage Hopkins. "She has a day off tomorrow and we're looking forward to her in the platform (event) on Saturday."
Juniors Riley Spitser and Brynne Beneke rounded out San Jose State's scoring for the night. Spitser placed fourth in the 500 free with her 4:49.03 time. Beneke was 16th in the 50 free at 23.57 after qualifying for the consolation final with a lifetime best of 23.44 in her preliminary heat race.
Beneke's 50 free and McCormick's 200 IM were two of 20 lifetime best swims by the Spartans during the day's morning and evening sessions.
"This is our best performance (as a team) in a conference championship since 2012 based on individual best times. We are performing very well. This team is very resilient despite the DQ's we had in the relays (on Wednesday)," Hopkins said about the first half of the conference championship meet.
In the team competition, San Jose State scored points in each of the day's five contested events and moved up one place to ninth in the 10-team championship with 83 points. Colorado State, in seventh with 94, and Fresno State, eighth with 90.5, are just ahead of the Spartans. Boise State at 275 holds a slim lead over San Diego State, second at 268.
The championships continue on February 20 with the 400 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back races scheduled.
