Irvine, Calif.----- In its first action since February 1, San José State University split its first two matches of the UC Irvine Invitational women's water polo tournament. The #8-ranked Spartans (10-4) lost their opening match to #9-ranked Cal State Northridge, 10-9 in overtime, and came back to defeat #19-ranked Pacific, 9-6.
The loss to Cal State Northridge (10-5) evened the season series at 1-1. San Jose State had beaten the Matadors, 8-6, at the UCSB Winter Invite in January. The Spartans had a 7-6 lead going into the fourth quarter, but needed Victoria Smith's second goal of the match with 2:09 remaining to send both teams into overtime tied at 8-8.
Kelcie Ferreira scored both of her goals in the first overtime giving Cal State Northridge a 10-8 lead. Rae Lekness responded with San Jose State's only overtime goal in the second overtime to close out the scoring.
San Jose State ended the first of two days at the UC Irvine Invitational on a winning note by defeating Pacific. Timi Molnar led the Spartans in scoring with three goals. Clara Espar Llaquet and Smith matched their two-goal output against Cal State Northridge in the win over Pacific.
Goalkeeper Katelynn Thompson matched her single-match career best of 14 saves in the victory.
San Jose State begins final-day action on Sunday, February 22 against the winner of the Michigan-UC Davis at 9:15 a.m.
