Feb. 21, 2015

Final Stats

San Diego, Calif. - The San José State women's basketball team saw the San Diego State Aztecs go on a nine minute, 19-3 first half run and never recovered in a 71-61 loss in Viejas Arena on Saturday afternoon.

With SDSU (10-16, 7-8 MW) leading 16-15 and 11:08 to play before the intermission, the Spartans offense went cold. San José State made just one of its next 13 attempts from the floor and by the time Riana Byrd sank a layup with 2:16 to go, the Aztecs were up 35-20. They finished the half with an additional 7-to-2 run and took a 42-22 lead into the half.

The Spartans (11-14, 5-9 MW) were down by a high of 25 points, 49-24 with just under 16 minutes to play, before they started chipping away at the lead. A Rachol West jumper at the 10:31 mark got the Spartans inside 20 points, 56-38.

Three and a half minutes later Ta'Rea Cunnigan's layup trimmed the deficit to 13 points, 60-47. A Cunnigan three with 2:32 to play got it down to single digits, 63-55, but the Spartans could get no closer and lost 71-61.

Jasmine Smith led SJSU, which shot 34 percent from the floor and just 13 percent from beyond the arc, with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Cunnigan contributed 13 points. Byrd and Aniya Baker added eight points each.

San Diego State's Deidra Smith led all scorers with 15 points. Erimma Amarikwa added 14 for the Aztecs who hit 45 percent of their shots attempts.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, February 25 when they host the Mountain West's top team, Colorado State. Tip off in The Event Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
