San Jose, Calif.--After a bad first round, the San José State women's golf team rebounded with second-lowest team score of the day in the second round and sit in second place at the 2015 Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational at the Almaden Golf & Country Club.
The Spartans shot a 312 in the first round and were fourth out of the 10 teams. The lowest individual Spartan score in round one was a 76 by Megan Osland and My Leander.
But, Osland and Leander kept pace with each other in the second round and helped San José State move up two spots in the team standings. The Spartans shot a 297, the second-lowest team score of the day, and are currently second at 609, 12 shots behind leader Fresno State. Osland and Leander each had a 73 and are tied for third place at 149, one shot behind the leaders.
Elizabeth Schultz is looking for her second consecutive and third top-20 finish of the year. She is tied for 20th at 155 after shooting 80-75. Regan De Guzman shot 80-76-156 and is tied for 22nd. Kathleen Rojas is tied for 46th at 164, with an 86-78 on the day. Playing as an individual, Fanny Johansson is tied for 32nd at 160 after she shot 84-76.
"I am extremely disappointed at the way we began the tournament," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "It took us too long to get adjusted to the course conditions, and we had one of our worst rounds of the season.
"I am pleased with the way we fought back in the second round, but we need to continue that fight in the final round to have a shot at winning the tournament."
Fresno State led both rounds on the day, shooting 303 and 294, the low round of the day, for a 597, and have a 12-shot lead over the Spartans. Fresno State also leads in the individual title race as teammates Hannah Sodersten (74-74) and Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir (78-70) are tied for first at 148.
Final round action of the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational begins Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The Spartans start on holes #1-5 and play with Fresno State and Boise State.
