Colorado Springs, Colo.----- 2015 Mountain West Freshman of the Year Morgan McCormick is one of four San Jose State University members of the women's swimming and diving team to earn all-conference honors based on their performances at the conference championship meet.
McCormick, from Golden, Colo.; freshman backstroker Colleen Humel, from Chicopee, Mass.; freshman diver Cari Reiswig, from Galt, Calif.; and junior freestyle specialist Riley Spitser from San Diego combined to earn 10 all-conference awards.
"I am very proud of each of our all-conference honorees. I am especially happy with the fact that we have three freshmen in Cari, Colleen and Morgan who earned the honor. This is a program that has the attention of the conference and will be climbing the conference rankings in the coming years," said San Jose State swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins.
Swimmers and divers at the 2015 Mountain West Championships earn all-conference honors for finishing first through eighth in an individual event.
McCormick (Arvada West HS) was named the Freshman of the Year in a vote by the conference coaches for her Mountain West record-setting victory in the 200 backstroke championship final at 1:54.13. In her morning preliminary heat swim, she established a short-lived San José State record of 1:55.45. McCormick also earned All-Mountain West honors for finishing fourth with a school record in the 100 backstroke and her fifth place finish in the 200 individual medley. In all three events, she recorded NCAA Championship B cut qualifying swims either in the preliminary or championship round.
Spitser (Rancho Bernardo HS) is the only non-freshman in the Spartans' quartet of award winners. The San Jose State school record holder in the 200, 500, 1,000 and 1,650 freestyles was one of two swimmers in the meet to earn all-conference honors in three freestyle races. Spitser was third in the 1,650, fourth in the 500 and sixth in the 200. An all-conference swimmer in the 200 in 2014, Spitser now has four Mountain West honors in the last two seasons.
Reiswig (California Virtual Academies) became the first San José State diver to be recognized by the Mountain West with all-conference honors. She opened the championship meet with a fourth-place finish in the 1-meter diving event and followed up with a fifth in the 3-meter.
Humel (Chicopee HS) rounds out the Spartan honorees. Her fifth-place finish in the 200 backstroke with an NCAA Championship B cut qualifying time of 1:58.06 cemented San José State's placing seventh in the team standings after starting the four-day championship in tenth.
