Honolulu, Hawai'i - The San Jose State softball team split its first two games of the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament. The Spartans defeated Longwood University 6-4 in eight innings but were run ruled, 14-1, by the hosts, the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine, in the nightcap.

"We played well in the first game," head coach Peter Turner said. "Against Hawai'i, we dropped a foul ball which would have gotten us out of the first inning down 4-0. We didn't make the play, went down 8-0 and never recovered."

Game 1 vs. Longwood

Jessie Hufstetler, went 3-for-3 and slammed two home runs. Madison Fish improved her record to 6-1 in 2.2 innings of relief and Nicole Schultz drove in the game-winning run in the eighth inning as the Spartans improved to 13-3 with a 6-4 win over Longwood University.

Hufstetler got the Spartans on the board with her first big fly of the game, a two-out solo shot to straightaway center field in the top of the first to put the Spartans up 1-0 after one.

In the second Emma Entzminger opened with a walk. Three batters later with Entzminger on second and two away, Michelle Cox singled to third. Entzminger advanced a base and scored an unearned run on a throwing error by the Longwood third baseman. SJSU took a 2-0 lead into the third.

In the bottom of the fourth, Longwood (2-5) used three hits, including a pair of doubles to score two runs and tie the game 2-2.

Hufstetler promptly untied it in the top of the fifth with her second solo shot of the game, this time to right center. Two batters later, Alyssa Martinez (1-for-3, R) walked and advanced to third on a single by Erin Rodriguez (1-for-4). With runners on first and third and two outs, Daisy Conchas (1-for-3, RBI) singled to left driving in Martinez. After four and a half, the Spartans were back up by two runs, 4-2.

In the sixth Longwood got a pair of one out doubles to cut the San José State lead to 4-3 and send starter Allison Lang to the showers. Lang pitches 5.1 innings, allowed seven hits, four earned runs, walked two and struck out one.

Fish came on and the first batter she faced reached on a field error by Sharon-Renae Estrada. With runners on first and third and single through the left side tied the game 4-4. Fish then induced a pair of pop up outs and the teams went to the seventh.

Each team put a runner on in the seventh, but couldn't push a run across and the game would go to the eighth and an international tiebreaker (ITB).

Conchas was placed on second to open the eighth and was lifted for pinch runner Anessa Kaylor. Nicole Schultz (1-for-4, RBI, R) led off with a single, which plated Kaylor for what would go on to be the game winning run. Cox (2-for-5) followed Schultz with another single and after a sacrifice bunt by Chelsea Jenner the Spartans had runners on second and third with one out. After Longwood intentionally walked Hufstetler to load the bases, Estrada (1-for-3, R) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Schultz. SJSU led 6-4 heading to the bottom of the eighth.

With its runner on second, Longwood was set down in order for the Spartans second ITB win in as many weeks. They defeated Illinois-Chicago 4-3 in eight innings in last week's Bronco Classic.

Game 2 vs. Hawai'i

Spartans starter Katelyn Linford gave up seven runs and failed to get out of the first inning as the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine (10-8) pounded SJSU 14-1 in five innings.

In two thirds of an inning, Linford (2-2) hit two batters, allowed a pair of singles and walked two. She gave up a one-out grand slam, which made it 4-0 Hawai'i and left with the bases loaded.

Collette Riggs came on and saw the first batter she faced take her out to left field for the second grand slam of the inning and an 8-0 lead.

The Rainbow Wahine got two runs in the second and four more in the third for a 14-0 lead.

The Spartans (13-4) managed three hits and a lone run came in the top of the fifth against Hawai'i starter Kanani Aina Cabrales (5-5). Taylor Purdy led off the fifth with a double down the left field line. Two batters later Casey Lester was hit by a pitch, followed by Brittany Abacherli who was also hit which load the bases. Chelsea Jenner hit into a fielder's choice, which scored Purdy to keep the Spartans from being shutout.

Riggs pitched 3.1 innings and allowed six hits, seven runs and five walks while striking out two. In addition to Purdy, Jessie Hufstetler and Nicole Schultz had the Spartans other two hits.
