Albuquerque, N.M.----- Cambree Harbaugh became the first San Jose State University athlete to score in two individual events at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships with a seventh-place finish in the triple jump on the final day of the three-day meet.
Harbaugh, a freshman from Meridian, Idaho, had a mark of 12.00 meters on her fifth attempt of the competition. She finished fifth in the long jump on the second day of the championships. Harbaugh was one of two Spartans to place in the triple. Teammate Nicole Iloanya, a freshman from Arlington, Texas, was eighth at 11.97 meters.
Harbaugh and Iloanya were two of the five San Jose State entries to place in the top eight and score. The Spartans finished with 17 points, 11th in the team standings, but 17 points more than in their first Mountain West Championship in 2014.
"Our people did a real good job. We had a lot of season best and personal bests," said San Jose State head coach Jeff Petersmeyer about the last two days. The Spartans had entries in 12 of the 17 events and top-eight scoring finishes in six of the 12. With the exception of senior/graduate student Emma Sutherland in the high jump, the rest of the San Jose State athletes to score are freshmen.
Possibly, the most satisfying final day result might be the 4x400 relay team of Caitlin Wilson, Makayla Webb, Jennifer Beckingham and Marayne Martin that closed out the meet with a season best 3:52.37 for eighth place. Their time beat the team's previous season best mark of 4:00.67 by more than eight seconds.
"I really liked the effort the mile relay put forth. On paper, it looked like we might not score, but we came through," the Spartans head coach added.
Wilson, the versatile sprinter from Tallahassee, Fla., matched Harbaugh for the best individual finish by a Spartan on the final day. She was seventh in the 200 meters at 24.58 before starting off San Jose State's scoring 4x400 meter relay quartet.
Beckingham, a freshman from England, opened the final day for San Jose State with an eighth-place finish in the mile at 5:02.07.
San Jose State now turns its attention to the outdoor season that begins the weekend of March 21 with meets in Berkeley and San Francisco State.
