Final Stats

Honolulu, Hawai'i - The San José State Softball team banged out eight hits and scored twice against No. 18 California, but surrendered a seventh inning run and lost 3-2 on day two of the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.

"We didn't play well enough to win today," head coach Peter Turner said. "We didn't execute the things we practice every day. Two leadoff walks came around to score and a missed cut off cost us another run. We have to make our opponents earn what they get. Today that didn't happen and this loss is our fault. We weren't beaten, we lost it."

California (16-1) had three hits through the first two innings, but left five runners stranded. In the third they cashed in.

A leadoff walk and a one-out double scored the Bears first run. Two batters later with runners on first and second, Cal got an RBI single to increase its lead to 2-0. The Spartans contributed to the Bears' success by committing two errors in the frame.

San José State (13-5) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third. Nicole Schultz got a one-out single. Michelle Cox then reached on a fielder's choice and moved up to second on a Cal throwing error. Two batters later, after Jessica Madrid had singled, Jessie Hufstetler drove Cox in on a hit to right field. It is her 31st hit and 33rd RBI in 18 games.

In the bottom of the fourth, Erin Rodriguez tied the game with her second home run of the year, a solo shot to left.

The score remained 2-2 until the seventh. Allison Lang, the Spartan's starter who scattered nine hits and struck out three in six innings was lifted for Madison Fish.

Fish (6-2) gave up a leadoff walk and then back-to-back singles to surrender a run. After a fly out, the Spartans turned a double play to get out of the inning but the damage was done.

San Jose State went one, two, three in the bottom of the seventh and lost 3-2.

Trzcinski improved her record to 7-0 with 3.2 innings of one hit relief. Eight of the Bears hits came from Jazmyn Jackson (4-for-4), Cheyenne Cordes (2-for-4) and Danielle Henderson (2-for-3, 2 RBI).
