San Jose, Calif. - The San José State women's soccer team held its year-end banquet in the Spartan Gold Room to honor the 2014 team and its individuals for their season accolades and hand out team awards.
San José State completed its best season since 2010, posting an overall record of 8-8-3, including a 5-5-1 posting in the Mountain West, finishing seventh in the final conference standings.
Head coach Lauren Hanson announced the awards for the 2014 season which included, senior Gabriella Stange being named the Offensive MVP. The Fremont Calif., native led the Spartans in goals (4) and points (10), including her game-winning goal in the 107th minute to give the Spartans a 2-1 victory over Air Force on senior day.
Junior Zoe Makrigiannis and freshman Claire Berkley were both named Defensive MVP. Makrigiannis, set the school record for shutouts in a single season with seven. Following the season, she was named First Team Mountain West, becoming the first Spartan to ever be selected to a Mountain West All-Conference team.
Berkley, the Pleasanton, Calif., native anchored the Spartans top ranked Mountain West defense. SJSU led the conference in both goals allowed (18) and goals against average (0.91).
Junior Rachel Docherty was named the team's Most Inspirational, while classmate Darlene Rodriguez was chosen as Rookie of the Year. Docherty, the defender from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, played in 11 matches for the Spartans earning the starting nod in 10, while Rodriguez, finished the season with a pair of goals and one assist, her biggest goal coming the Spartans 1-1 draw with New Mexico on Sept. 28.
Freshman Alexis Wiegant earned Most Improved honors and Stephanie Rebagliati wrapped up the awards night receiving the Spartans Coaches Award.
