Waikoloa, Hawai'i --- Landon Polterock got out to a hot start, firing a 4-under 68, in the San José State men's golf team's opening round of spring action at the Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawai'i on Thursday.
After round one, the Spartans are +4 as a team in the play five, score four format at the 7,074-yard par 72 Kings' Course.
Six birdies on the day for Polterock helped him climb inside the top-10 into a tie for 8th place alongside Hawai'i-Hilo's Dalen Yamauchi, Oklahoma State's Kristoffer Ventura and Tobias Eden of Arizona State.
"He's done some amazing work on his game in the last three months," said Spartans' head coach John Kennaday. "We are seeing just the tip of the iceberg of what's possible for him"
Cody Blick, ranked 25th in the nation by Golfstat, shot even-par in round one. Blick went 3-under on his last 11 holes to get his round back to even par. He'll begin round two in a tie for 49th place.
Henrik Sohlberg is tied for 77th after shooting a 75 (+3). Felix Möesmang ended with a 77 (+5), and Marcus Potter shot 78 (+6). Freshman Brett Thawley also shot a 78 competing as an individual for SJSU.
"I'm not pleased with our number today, but we saw some good things," Kennaday said. "We have a lot to learn, but I feel like we made headway today on things you can only get done in tournaments."
#14-Southern California, at -12, sits on top of the team leader board after 18 holes. Washington's Cheng-Tsung Pan, who entered the tournament ranked first in the country by Golfstat, leads all individuals after shooting a 7-under 65.
