MEN'S HOOPS HOSTS NEVADA SATURDAY AFTERNOON
The San José State men's basketball team returns home this Saturday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. tip against the Nevada Wolf Pack. It's the first meeting of the season between the two teams, both of which are out to halt a losing streak. Get you tickets today by calling the Spartans Ticket Office at408-924-7589. SPARTANS OUTLASTED BY BULLDOGS FOR 81-63 LOSS
San José State trailed by two points in the first five minutes of the second half, but Fresno State transition offense wore the Spartans down over the final 10 minutes. The Bulldogs used five players in double-figures scoring to pull away for an 18-point win. Rashad Muhammad led the Spartans in scoring for the 11th time this season with his 16 points, and Jaleel Williams made it three straight games in double-digits scoring with his 10 points.
WILLIAMS GOES THREE STRAIGHT IN DOUBLE-FIGURES
Jaleel Williams is averaging 13.3 points and eight rebounds over the last three games. He had perhaps his best game of the season against Air Force (1/28) with 16 points and seven rebounds, and followed that up with SJSU's first double-double performance of the season when he scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds at New Mexico (1/31).
MUHAMMAD FINDS DOUBLE-FIGURES
Sophomore guard Rashad Muhammad has finished in double-figures scoring in 11 of his last 12 games played. He's averaging 15.2 points per game during that stretch.
MITCHELL IS A TOP-10 REBOUNDER IN CONFERENCE PLAY
Sophomore forward Brandon Mitchell is currently ranked 9th in the MW for rebounding during conference play. He averages six rebounds per contests and 2.1 offensive rebounds, which ranks him seventh in the MW. Mitchell has been inserted into the starting lineup for the Spartans for the last four games.
MUHAMMAD CLIMBING THE TOP-10 LIST FOR THREES
Sophomore Rashad Muhammad continued to climb up the SJSU all-time ranks for made threes after sinking a couple at Fresno State which put him past Ricky Berry (1986-88) at 113 and into a tie for 8th with Terry Cannon (1990-92, 94) at 114. Tim Pierce (2007-09) is San José State's career-leader for made threes with 153.
SHOTS NOT FALLING FOR SJSU
Against Fresno on Wednesday, the team shot 41 percent. It was the first time SJSU finished 40 percent or higher shooting since the two teams met last on Jan. 14. San José State was getting the looks it wanted at the basket against New Mexico (1/31), but the shots just would not drop. The Spartans finished the contest shooting 25 percent (13-52), which made it four out of the last six games below 25 percent from the floor.
MORE ON NEVADA
The Wolf Pack (6-15, 2-7 MW) come into Saturday's game after a nail-biting 65-63 loss to one of the conference's top teams in San Diego State. Nevada has lost seven straight, but they've played their opponents close, losing the last four games by an average margin of 4.8 points. AJ West comes into the game as the MW's top rebounder at 10.1 per game. He also leads the Wolf Pack in scoring at 12.5 points per game. Nevada is coached by David Carter in his sixth season.
LAST TIME AGAINST NEVADA
San José State only win since joining the Mountain West before the 2013-14 season came against Nevada in the two teams' last meeting on February 18, 2014 in Reno. Jalen James buried the game-winning shot with 1.8 seconds left. The last meeting between the two teams in The Event Center ended in a 62-50 Nevada victory on January 1, 2014. The Wolf Pack controls the all-time series against the Spartans 34-31.
