San Jose, Calif. - Three forwards, two midfielders, a three-time all-league defender and a national championship goalkeeper signed a National Letter-of-Intent with the San Jose State University women's soccer program. Lauren Hanson, the Spartans' head coach made the announcement.
The seven newcomers who will enroll at the University and wear the gold, white and blue for the Spartans beginning in the fall 2015 semester are forwards Aspyn Audibert (Alta Loma HS/Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), Darriell Frankin (La Habra HS/La Habra, Calif.), and Morgan Mathews (Mountain View HS/Mountain View, Calif.); midfielders Alyssa Bertuleit (Peninsula College/Sparks, Nev.) and Daria Manzano (Poly HS/Long Beach, Calif.); defender Veronica Chung (Redmond HS/Woodinville, Wash.); and goalkeeper Paige Simoneau (Santiago HS/Corona, Calif.).
"This group has the ability to help push our team and program to the next level and work toward our goal of being a top program in the Mountain West," said Hanson. "They all have played at a very high level in their youth soccer careers, which will help with experience to compete at the Division I level. My staff and I look forward to their contributions on and off the field starting this fall."
Audibert, a forward, plays for Alta Loma High School in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., was named a first-team Baseline League player and was a key part of the Braves' journey to the 2013-14 league championship.
Playing the last two years at Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Wash., Bertuleit was a two-time Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAACC) first-team member in 2013 and 2014. Last year, she finished seventh in the NWAACC in assists with 10, while leading the team in the same category. Beruleit spent her high school days at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks, Nev. earning Midfielder of the Year honors in 2012 and leading her club team, Nevada Elite, to the US Club Regional Championship in 2012.
Chung, a defender, from Redmond High School in Redmond, Wash., helped her team capture the 4A KingCo Championship in 2012. Chung was named 4A KingCo Second Team in 2013, while earning honorable mention honors in 2011 and 2012. The Woodinville, Wash., native helped lead her club, Crossfire Premier, to a pair of Washington State Championships in 2008 (U11) and 2011 (U14).
Franklin, a forward, is a senior at La Habra High School in La Habra, Calif. The La Habra, Calif., native, was named the team captain for her club team, the ECNL Strikers.
Matthews, a forward from Mountain View High School in Mountain View, Calif., helped lead her team to an 11-3-0 overall record in 2015. Matthews earned first-team all-league honors three times and was named Freshman-of-the-Year, Sophomore-of-the-Year, and Offensive Player of the Year as a junior. Her club team, Juventus Avanza, coached by Ivan Bandov, won the CYSA and Nor Cal State Cup Championship in 2014.
Manzano, a four-year letterwinner at Long Beach Poly in Long Beach, Calif., captained the Jackrabbits to Moore League Championships during her freshman, junior, and senior seasons. The versatile forward and defender earned the team Coach's Award in 2013-14. She also played club soccer for Slammers CDA coached by Alex Comargo, Walker Comargo, and Luis Barahona.
Simoneau posted 13 shutouts during her junior year and 16 in her Santiago High School career. The goalkeeper was named a second-team All-C.I.F. Southern Section Division II award winner in 2014 and is in her second season as a team captain for one of MaxPreps' top-100 ranked high school programs in the country. Simoneau plays club soccer for Legends FC in Chino, Calif., and was the goalkeeper for the 2012 U-15 team that won the National Youth Soccer Championship in South Carolina.
"We are very excited about the 2015 incoming class of women's soccer players," added Hanson. "They are athletic, hard working, and a very committed group of players."
