URBANA, Ill. - The San José State University women's tennis stormed back from an early deficit before eventually falling to No. 46 Illinois, 4-3, Saturday at the Atkins Tennis Center.
The Spartans (3-3) fell behind 1-0 after a pair of 6-2 doubles wins by the Illini (3-1) tandems of Melissa Kopinski and Louise Kwong and Grace Tapak and Alexis Casati.
San José State quickly took the lead as Gaelle Rey and Sybille Gauvain dispatched their Illini counterparts to put the Spartans up 2-1. For Gauvain, the three-set upset of 82nd-ranked Casati marked her first-career win over a nationally ranked opponent.
After trading the next two matches to make it 3-2, the Spartans could not hold off the Illini from staging the comeback, as wins from No. 97 Louise Kwong and Jade Hilton sealed the 4-3 victory for Illinois.
The Spartans complete their Midwest road trip Sunday, when they travel to Chicago to take on No. 47 DePaul at 1:00 p.m. CT.
