Tucson, Ariz. --- The San José State men's golf team shot a 293 (+5) on Sunday in the second round of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT), marking a 10-shot improvement from round one.
Through 36 holes, the Spartans are +20 on the 7,200-yard par 72 Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National, and are in 14th place.
"We didn't feel like we played that bad yesterday, but it's good to see improvement," said Spartans' head coach John Kennaday. "We actually feel like we may have let one get away today though. The wind died down and we just weren't able to put up as good of scores as some of the other schools."
#22-California shot -9 as a team Sunday and jumped up into first place on the team leader board at 571 (-5). New Mexico went -11 and jumped from eighth place to second.
Scott Munger led the Spartans Sunday with a 1-under-par 71. He had the round at -5 through 13 holes, but ended up going 4-over-par on his last five holes. A birdie on his next-to-last hole, the par-five eighth, helped keep his second round score in red figures. Munger's 143 (-1) through 36 holes has him in 12th place on the individual leader board.
"He is a good player," Kennaday said. "He just played like we all know he can today."
Marcus Potter made the biggest turnaround for SJSU from round one to round two. After an 83 yesterday, Potter carded a 2-over 74 on Sunday. Taylor Bromley also bettered his position with a 73 in round two after an 80 yesterday.
Cody Blick began the day tied for 10th place, but a second-round 75 (+3) backed him up to 27th. Landon Polterock went +7 on his first nine holes, but cleaned things up with nine straight pars to end his round. Polterock is in 78th place at +15 for the tournament.
Final-round action at the NIT begins tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. MT. Fans can follow along with live updates via www.birdiefire.com or on Twitter and Instagram using #NIT2015.
