LAS VEGAS --- Coming off of one of the top wins in program history, the San José State women's basketball team got out to an early lead against Boise State and held it for over 25 minutes. But it was the Broncos who hit seven of their final nine shots in the last five minutes to end the Spartans' Mountain West Tournament run with a 76-67 defeat in the semifinal game at the Thomas and Mack Center Wednesday night.
It all boiled down to the last five minutes when the eighth seeded Spartans and fourth seeded Broncos were knotted up, 58-58.
Deanna Weaver hit a three and Shalen Shaw scored seven straight points to push Boise State's lead up to 69-62 with 1:55 remaining.
Ta'Rea Cunnigan, who was held scoreless in the first 20 minutes, countered with two layups of her own and also knocked down a three to keep the Spartans breathing.
San José State had the ball down 71-67 with under a minute to play, but turned the ball over when an Aniya Baker pass bounced on the sideline out of bounds stripe. From there the Spartans were forced to foul, and Boise State scored the game's last five points at the free throw line.
The game was closely contested the entire way through. The Spartans' first three baskets were all from beyond the arc. Baker, Rebecca Woodberry and Nyre Harris all connected from deep to get SJSU out to a 9-2 lead. Seven points was the largest lead for either team until the final 10 seconds of the contest.
This being the third game in three days, the Spartans used a deep rotation and received points contribution from every player who entered. Woodberry led the way with 17 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Cunningan put in 15 points, Baker finished with nine and Harris with eight.
For Cunnigan, her 15 points brought her already San José State career-record total to rest at 2,062.
Shaw scored 20 points to lead Boise State. Brooke Pahukoa added 19 points, and Weaver finished with 11.
Finally, as if the Spartans hadn't rewritten enough records at the MW Tournament this week; Cunnigan's three at the 1:12 mark in the second half gave SJSU 32 three-point makes, a MW tourney team record.
