SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State's 60th-ranked women's tennis team made quick work of visiting Southern Utah Tuesday afternoon, downing the Thunderbirds 7-0 at Spartan Courts for its fourth consecutive victory.
San José State (7-4, 0-0 MW), which moved up 15 slots in the March 10 edition of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, blanked Southern Utah (1-3, 0-0 Big Sky) at home for a third straight season. The No. 60 ranking is the highest in the history of the program, with the previous best of No. 64 coming on the week of March 4, 2013.
Jessica Willett and Julianna Bacelar started the day with a 6-0 victory at No. 3 doubles, which was quickly followed up by wins from the doubles tandems of Gaelle Rey and Marie Klocker and Sybille Gauvain and Abbie Pahz.
In singles action, Abbie Pahz downed SUU's Emily Lemmon by a 6-0, 6-0 score to pick up her third straight win.
After Malin Cubukcu wrapped up her ninth consecutive singles victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win out of the No. 5 spot, Julianna Bacelar clinched the match with her 120th career victory at San José State, a 6-0, 6-1 trouncing of Southern Utah's Laura Martin Lozano.
Marie Klocker, Sybille Gauvain and Gaelle Rey each picked up straight-set victories of their own to push the Spartans to the final 7-0 margin.
San José State kicks off Mountain West action when it visits No. 42 Fresno State (10-3, 1-0 MW) on Friday, March 13 at 12:00 p.m.
