Downpours Don't Stop Spartans From Climbing Up At Bandon Dunes

March 14, 2015

Bandon, Ore. --- Rain poured down for most of Saturday's second round at the Bandon Dunes Championship, but that didn't stop the San José State men's golf team from moving up four spots into a tie for sixth place. It also didn't keep Cody Blick from maintaining his first-round lead, which still stands by one shot.

"This is why we come up here," said Spartans' head coach John Kennaday. "We come here for the extreme conditions and to get this experience. This is how you put a team together and it's part of a player's growth."

The Spartans have a 36-hole team total of 582 (+6), and sit just seven strokes off the lead held by Duke and Missouri at -1.

Blick birdied his 16th hole of the day, the par-four seventh hole, and finshed with consecutive pars to shoot 73 (+1) and maintain his lead by one shot over Washington State's Michael Anderson.

Landon Polterock came through with the lowest score of the day for SJSU, a 1-under 71. It marked an eight-shot turnaround from his 79 yesterday.

"Landon's round happened at a good time," Kennaday said. "The flashes of brilliance are starting to come together and guys are starting to see the fruits of their labor at this point in the season."

Matthew Ashley turned in a 74 in the second round, and Taylor Bromley carded his second 77 of the event. Brett Thawley competed as an individual and shot 79.

The Bandon Dunes Championship, at the 6,830-yard par 72 Bandon Dunes Course will conclude tomorrow with 18 holes beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Heavy rain is expected again for the final round.
