Bandon, Ore. --- Cody Blick has won the fourth tournament of his Spartan career at the rain-shortened Bandon Dunes Championship. The Spartans were five holes into the event's final round when constant rain led officials to cancel the final 18 holes, making the 36-hole scores the final result.
Blick finished shooting 65-73-138 (-6), giving him a one-shot victory over Washington State's Michael Anderson. A birdie on Blick's 16th hole of round two got him to the eventual winning score of -6. His opening-round 65 featured an eagle and five birdies, and it was only the second round at -7 or better by a Spartan since 2010. Blick's school-record 10-under-par 62 at the Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational is the other.
"It's great to get a win and it is much deserved for Cody," said Spartans' head coach John Kennaday. "He had a good chance to extend that lead today, and I think he would have been very tough to catch in the final round."
The cancelation of round three was bitter-sweet for the Spartans as a team as it saw Blick earn his second individual title of the 2014-15 season, but never got the chance to make a run at leaders Duke and Missouri which were only seven strokes ahead on the team leaderboard.
"I'm really proud of the approach our guys took to some adversities they faced in this tournament," Kennaday said. "It was tough to just look up and see the flight of your ball with the rain and wind. This was a good week forus as a team. Even though we finished sixth, we were ready to make a run."
Scott Munger and Landon Polterock battled through the elements yesterday to shoot 70 (-2) and 71 (-1) respectively to help SJSU climb up from tenth to sixth. Polterock ended up in a tie for 50th place, while Munger ended up last after being disqualified in round one for signing an incorrect scorecard.
Matthew Ashley shot 73-74-147 (+3) to finish in a tie for 27th place. Taylor Bromley carded a pair of 77's to finish tied for 68th, and Brett Thawley shot 76-79-155 (+11) to finish tied for 73rd playing as an individual.
The Spartans return to Oregon in just over a week, but head inland to Eugene for the Oregon Duck Invitational. The two-day event begins Monday March 23.
