Greensboro, N.C.----- San Jose State University freshman Morgan McCormick set a school record in the 100 backstroke on the second day of the 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
McCormick posted a time of 53.48 winning her preliminary round heat and breaking the previous school record of 53.99 set by Heather Denman at the 2009 Western Athletic Conference Championships.
"I was thrilled when I saw the scoreboard," said McCormick, who was seeded 50th out of 52 entries. The Golden, Colo., resident finished in 35th place and eclipsed her previous best time of 54.42 posted at the 2015 Mountain West Championships in late February.
"It was a great swim from start to finish. Morgan's been focusing on her backstroke for the last month," said San Jose State women's swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins.
"I'm thrilled to see her drop a second from her conference swim and break our longest-standing school record. It was a tremendous performance."
McCormick credited her underwater kicking and Hopkins cited her efficiency with her turns at each end of the pool for her San José State record-setting performance. The Spartan swimmer also felt more relaxed in her second day of NCAA Championship competition. She began the three-day meet finishing 63rd out of 72 in the 200 individual medley.
"It (her time) shows me my backstroke is on point and I am looking forward to tomorrow," McCormick said about competing in the 200 backstroke on March 21, the final day of the meet. She is seeded 30th out of 57 entries with her school and conference record-setting time of 1:54.13.
