Kapalua, Maui-- Regan De Guzman shot an even-par 72, and the San Jose State women's golf team finished the first round of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic tied for fifth at 299 Monday afternoon at The Bay Course in Kapalua, Maui.
De Guzman is tied for seventh place at 72. Starting her round on #10, she was one-under through her first nine holes with birdies on #14 and 15 and a bogey on #17. Over her final nine holes, De Guzman had birdies on #2 and #5 and three bogeys to finish even par on her round.
Megan Osland and My Leander are in a group tied for 16th at 75. Osland made four birdies during her round. Leander was even over her first 15 holes before three consecutive bogeys left her at 75. Her only birdie of the round was on #15.
Elizabeth Schultz is tied for 42nd at 77, while Kathleen Rojas shot an 83 and is tied 77nd. Fanny Johansson, playing as an individual, shot an 85 and is tied for 83rd.
Texas leads the tournament with an even-par 288. The Spartans are just 11 shots out of first place at 299. Louisville and UC Davis are tied for second at 290, while Gonzaga is fourth at 295.
"We played the par-5 holes really well today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "However, we had too many three putts during this round. Our experience on this course should help us over the next two days."
The Spartans begin the second round on Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. HDT/10:45 a.m. PDT. They will play with SMU, Oregon and Oregon State.
