Palo Alto, Calif. --- The San José State men's golf team shot 2-under and are in eighth place out of 24 teams at the conclusion of opening-round play at The Goodwin.
Cody Blick led the Spartans, as he has done in every tournament so far this season, with a 4-under 66. But SJSU got a nice lift from Taylor Bromley and Scott Munger in the middle of the lineup, who both carded an even-par 70 on Thursday at the 6,727-yard, par 70, Stanford Golf Course.
Blick got hot when he stuffed his tee shot three feet from the pin on the par-three fourth, and tapped in for birdie. He birdied the fifth and continued with three more on his back-nine. The only blemish of the day was a bogey on the par-three 17th.
Blick goes into tomorrow's round two shots back of the lead held by UNLV's John Oda at -6.
Bromley's low-round of the season began with an eagle and a birdie on the first two holes respectively. He kept the round at -2 until a double-bogey on the 14th hole, but finished out with four consecutive pars to arrive at70 (E).
Munger made three birdies on the day, all on the back where he shot 34 (-1). After consecutive bogies on the 14th and 15th, Munger got his round back to even-par with a birdie on 16 and closed with pars on the final two holes.
