San Jose, Calif. --- Despite a tough defensive effort, the San José State men's basketball team was unable to find its offense and suffered a 68-51 loss at the hands of Boise State Wednesday night in The Event Center.

"It was a complex defensive scheme and our guys picked it up really well," said Spartans' head coach Dave Wojcik. "We used three or four different defenses that sort of stymied them. But it came down to our offense again, which is our Achilles' heel."

Boise State had a 21-16 lead with 8:25 left in the first period, when San José State went the next 11:41 without a basket. That translated to a 24-9 Broncos run which put the Spartans down by 20 points at the 16:36 mark of the second half.

Rashad Muhammad scored 11 of his game-high 17 points in the second period when SJSU held Boise State to 30 percent shooting. The two teams were even in the final 20 minutes, 30-30, but the Spartans were unable to climb back from the earlier dry spell.

"You have to make shots in the beginning of the game," Wojcik said. "We just dug ourselves a hole."

Brandon Mitchell made his first start since February 4, and scored seven points to go along with a career-high 11 rebounds. Darryl Gaynor II scored 11, and Jaleel Williams added 10 points.

The Spartans' defense held the MW's leading scorer Derrick Marks to 13 points, but Boise State had three others finish in double-figures scoring. Rob Heyer led the Broncos with 15 points.

"We did a great job with the scout," Wojcik said. "I'm really pleased with our effort, and we battled down to the very end."

San José State will play its final game of the season this Saturday night against UNLV in The Event Center. Seniors Jaleel Williams and Devante Wilson will be honored in a pregame ceremony prior to the 7:00 p.m. PT tipoff. For tickets, call the Spartan Ticket Office at 408-924-7589.
