Clara Espar Llaquet Sets Single-Match School Scoring Record At Harvard Invitational

March 7, 2015

Cambridge, Mass.----- Sophomore Clara Espar Llaquet set a San Jose State University women's water polo single-match scoring record with nine goals in a 17-5 win over Iona College in the Spartans' first match of the Harvard Invitational.

Espar Llaquet, the team's leading scorer on the season with 51 goals, surpassed the previous San Jose State single-match of eight held by several players including her teammate Rae Lekness.

The Spartans (13-5), ranked ninth in the March 4 national coaches poll, jumped out to a 3-0 and were not seriously threatened the rest of the way. San José State had its highest goal-scoring quarter of the season with nine in the second quarter to take a 12-2 halftime lead. The nine goals match the team mark last set at a 2014 non-conference match with CSU Bakersfield at the Bruin Invitational in Los Angeles.

Bianca Seyfert and Timi Molnar were two more Spartans with a pair each to score multiple goals in the team's first of four matches in the Harvard Invitational. In all, seven players scored for San José State.

Starting goalkeeper Katelynn Thompson played the first half and was credited with three saves. Tayler Peters played the second half and stopped three shots.

Hannah Schultz led Iona (8-6) in scoring with four goals.

San José State concludes its first day of action taking on Brown in a March 7 afternoon match. The Spartans' four-game tournament activity includes contests with host Harvard and Marist on March 8.
