Spartans Take Two At Harvard Invite; Espar Llaquet Sets Scoring Record

March 7, 2015

Cambridge, Mass.----- Sophomore Clara Espar Llaquet set a San Jose State University women's water polo single-match scoring record as the Spartans won both of their first-day matches in the Harvard Invitational.

Espar Llaquet scored nine of her 12 goals on the day in a 17-5 win over Iona College (8-6) in the Spartans' first match and three more in the nightcap as San Jose State dispatched Brown (7-5), 13-2. The team's leading scorer on the season with 54 goals, Espar Llaquet surpassed the previous San Jose State single-match of eight held by several players including her teammate Rae Lekness.

The #9-ranked Spartans (14-5) had one of their best defensive days of the season yielding just seven goals. In the last three matches, including one against #1-ranked UCLA, San Jose State was scored on just 14 times.

"We played `let's get one stop' every time. Our defense had some nice stops and some good shot blocks. I was very impressed we only gave up seven goals," said head coach Johnny Bega.

In both matches, San Jose State jumped out to a 3-0 lead and was not seriously threatened the rest of the way. San José State had its highest goal-scoring quarter of the season with nine in the second quarter of the Iona game to take a 12-2 halftime lead. The nine goals match the team mark last set at a 2014 non-conference match with CSU Bakersfield at the Bruin Invitational in Los Angeles.

Bianca Seyfert and Timi Molnar were two more Spartans with a pair each to score multiple goals in the Iona win. Seyfert added three more to match Espar Llaquet for game-high scoring honors in the Brown victory. In all, seven different Sparatns scored in each San José State victory.

Goalkeepers Katelynn Thompson and Tayler Peters each started a game and made 10 saves apiece in their 32 minutes of action. Thompson started the Iona contest and Peters began the Brown contest.

San José State concludes its four-game tournament activity includes contests with host Harvard and Marist on March 8.
