San Diego, Calif. -- For the second straight game the San José State Spartans hammered out 15 hits and used the long ball to blow open a 1-1 tie on its way to a 10-1, six-inning victory over San Diego State in Mountain West action on Saturday night.
In two games against the Aztecs, SJSU (28-14, 8-3 MW) has rapped out 31 hits and scored 20 runs. The Spartans have reached double-digit hits 23 times in 2015 and are 23-0 in those games.
The six-inning victory marks the first time in 16 seasons in the Mountain West that San Diego State has suffered a run-rule loss at home and just the third time overall in their conference history.
Six Spartans had multi hit games led by Emma Entzminger (3-for-4, RBI).
With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the fifth and runners on first and second, Taylor Purdy (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) ripped a double to left to drive in two runs. Entzminger then doubled in Purdy to make it 4-1.
Nicole Schultz followed Entzminger with a two-run shot to left, her second home run of the season, to make it 6-1. In the game, SJSU was 7-for-13 with two outs and all five runs in the fifth came after two outs had been recorded.
San Diego State (27-16, 10-4 MW) starter Erica Romero, who surrendered 11 hits and six earned runs in five innings, was lifted for reliever Taylor Stewart in the top of the sixth.
Stewart didn't fair any better against the Mountain West's top hitting team. With one out and two on, Alyssa Martinez hammered her fourth home run of the year. The shot was to left center and made it 9-1.
A throwing error by the Aztecs' catcher allowed Brittany Abacherli to score from third to make it 10-1.
SJSU starter Allison Lang gave up five hits and one run in earning her 10th win of the season. Romero was tagged with the loss for the second night in a row.
The Spartans have won the series and go for a sweep on Sunday at noon at SDSU Softball Field.
