With its final bye of the season in the rearview mirror, the San José State University women's water polo team returns to action facing #2-ranked Stanford University in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match Saturday, April 4, at the Avery Aquatics Center on the Stanford campus.
The weekend meeting is the second this season between the two-nationally-ranked teams. The #9-ranked Spartans (18-7, 0-3 MPSF) lost to Stanford (17-1, 2-0 MPSF), 11-8, in a February 1 pool-play match of the Stanford Invitational. The three-goal difference is one of only four Stanford matches decided by three goals or less in 2015.
For Coach Johnny Bega's team, the Spartans are on a two-match win streak and face their eighth top-10 ranked team this season. All seven of the Spartans losses this season are against top-10 squads.
Each team has two of the top-10 MPSF scorers on its side. For San José State, sophomore Clara Espar Llaquet, #2 in the MPSF scoring 3.16 goals per match, and Rae Lekness, #6 at 2.24 goals per match, lead the Spartans' offensive attack. Lekness scored twice in the first meeting between these teams. Espar Llaquet went scoreless for only the second time in her career. Stanford's Kiley Neushul and Ashley Grossman are fifth and seventh, respectively.
