Softball Can't Capitalize In 6-0 Loss

April 2, 2015

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. -- The San José State had runners in scoring position in each of the first five, and in a total of six innings, but couldn't come up with a hit to drive in any runs and lost 6-0 to the Colorado State Rams on Thursday afternoon.

Starter Allison Lang (8-7) set down the first nine Rams she faced, but the Spartans (25-13, 5-2 MW), who left 10 runners on, couldn't give her any run support.

San José State, which had scored at least one run in the first inning of its last seven games, looked poised to continue the streak after Michelle Cox (2-for-4) led off the bottom of the first with a single to left. She stole second and after a walk and groundout, SJSU had runners on second and third with two outs. But, in what would become the rule of the day, the Spartans couldn't get the clutch hit. Alyssa Martinez grounded out to end the threat.

In the second, San José State had a runner at second with one out, but couldn't advance her.

Jessica Madrid (1-for-3) led off the third with a walk, followed by a Jessie Hufstetler (1-for-2) double to put two in scoring position with no outs. The next batter, Sharon-Renae Estrada, hit a grounder to short. Madrid tried to score on the play, but was cut down at the plate. Another ground out moved Estrada into scoring position. But with two outs, Erin Rodriguez hit a frozen rope right over the bag at third, which Colorado State's Savannah Clark stabbed to end the inning.

After an infield single to open the top of fourth, the Colorado State got a one-out, RBI single from Shae Rodriguez to take a 1-0 lead.

Taylor Purdy led off the Spartans' fourth with a double to left center and got to third with one out, but San José State stranded her there.

Colorado State (20-16, 1-3 MW) busted the game open the sixth with three runs on three hits and a pair of Spartans' errors. All the damage came with two outs and all the runs were unearned.

The Rams added two more in the seventh on a two-RBI double from Rodriguez for the final score of 6-0.

Holly Reinke (9-10) earned the win for Colorado State with a complete game, seven hit shutout.

The teams return to action on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on SJSU Field.
