Rancho Mirage, Calif.-- Megan Osland was just one of two golfers to shoot under-par Monday, and the San José State women's golf team is second at 293 after the first round of the 2015 Mountain West Women's Golf Championship being played at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at the Mission Hills Country Club.
Osland shot a three-under 69 in the first round. She is three shots behind San Diego State's Milagros Chaves, who tied the tournament record for a single round with a 66 to lead the individual standings.
Osalnd made four birdies on the day and was never over par during her round. She started par-birdie, then made four consecutive pars before finishing the front-nine birdie-bogey-birdie. On the back nine, Osland made eight pars and a birdie (par-4, #12) to finish at 69, her sixth under-par round of the season.
Three other Spartan players are in the top-25 after the first round. Freshman Elizabeth Schultz shot a one-over 73 and is tied for sixth with two others. She made four birdies during her round (#8, #10, #16, #18) and 10 pars. After starting with consecutive pars on her first two holes, Schultz had back-to-back bogeys on #3 and #4. She then shot two-under over the next eight holes, making birdies on #8 and #10. After making a double bogey in #13 and a bogey on #15, Schultz finished the round strong by making birdie-par-birdie on her final three holes.
Regan De Guzman shot a three-over 75 and is tied for 14th. Despite making only one birdie over her first nine holes, she responded by shooting even with two birdies and two bogeys on the final nine holes.
Kathleen Rojas shot a four-over 76 and is tied for 22nd. After beginning the round with bogeys on the first two holes, she responded by making eight consecutive pars. Rojas made one birdie on her round, the par-four, 351-yard #15, and finished with 12 pars made.
My Leander is tied for 38th at 81. She started the round at -1 over the first five holes, including a birdie on the par-4, 356-yard #4, and shot a 38 on the front nine. Unfortunately, Leander shot a 43 over her final nine holes for the 81.
The Spartans finished the first round with a five-over 293, and are five shots behind leader San Diego State who shot an even-par 288. San José State also has a six-shot lead over UNLV and Nevada who each shot 299. Three of the top teams on the leaderboard also represent the three nationally-ranked teams in the conference -- SDSU #27, SJSU #44, and UNLV #20.
San José State leads the tournament in par-4 scoring at 4.12 and birdies with 13.
Second round action at the championship begins Tuesday at 7 a.m. San José State will play with UNLV and San Diego State. The first players from the three teams begin at 8:30 a.m., with the final players teeing off at 9:06 a.m.
