Women's Golf Tied For First At MW Championship After Two Rounds

Rancho Mirage, Calif.--Three Spartan women's golfers are in the top-10, and the San José State women's golf team moved into a tie for first with San Diego State at 589 after two rounds of the 2015 Mountain West Women's Golf Championship being played on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at the Mission Hills Country Club.

San José State entered the second round five shots behind San Diego State. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the round before finishing tied for first. The Spartans tied for the best round of the day with an eight-over 296, while the Aztecs shot 301.

The team continues to lead the tournament in birdies made and par-4 scoring. The Spartans made 12 birdies in round two for 25 birdies over the first two days. The team is also leading at par-4 scoring at 4.16.

"We played really well today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "Everybody is contributing solid rounds during this tournament. The wind kicked up this afternoon as we were playing #18. We had a little bit of everything today -- wind, thunder and rain."

Regan De Guzman led the Spartans on Tuesday with a one-under 71. She moved into the top-10 and is tied for fifth at two-over 146. De Guzman made four birdies during her round and is tied for the second-most made in the tournament at seven.

De Guzman started the second round with birdies on holes one and four and pars on two, three and five to go two-under. After a bogey on #6, she rebounded by going par-par-birdie to finish the front nine at two-under. The back nine found De Guzman going to three-under par after making a birdie on #11. She made six pars over the last nine holes, making bogeys on #15 and #18.

"Regan is hitting the ball solid and hit a lot of good shots," said Dormann. "She is hitting her 4-and 5-irons good, which is crucial on the par-3 holes, and playing well on the par-5 holes."

Megan Osland shot a 78 during her round and is now tied for seventh at three-over 147. She started one-under through her first four holes with a birdie on #2 for the second consecutive round. Osland made three bogeys on her first nine holes and on #10 to go to +3 on her round. She then made six consecutive pars before a double-bogey and bogey on the last two holes found her shooting 78.

Elizabeth Schultz continued her stay in the top-10 by shooting a 75 and is ninth at four-over 148. She made three birdies during her round and is tied for second-most made at the tournament with seven. Schultz was one-over 37 after her first nine holes, making her birdies on #2, #7 and #8. She made seven pars and two bogeys over her last nine holes on the day.

My Leander made the biggest jump of the tournament, improving 17 spots. She shot an even-par 72 and is tied for 21st at nine-over 153.

Leander's second-round score was never over par. She started her round par-birdie-par-birdie before a bogey at #5. She finished the front nine with four consecutive pars to finish the front nine at one-under 35. Twice on the back nine, Leander was two-under, making a birdie at #10 to go to two-under par before a bogey at #12 sent her back to one-under par. Another birdie at #15 had Leander at -2, but back-to-back bogeys on #17 and #18 had her shooting even-par 72 for the day.

"My and Elizabeth managed their games well today," said Dormann. "They put the ball where it needed to be hit, and their short games were solid."

Kathleen Rojas shot an 82 in the second round and is now tied for 35th at +14, 158. She made nine pars during her round but had a string of bogeys on the back-nine.

"Everybody needs to come into the final round with a good attitude," said Dormann. "We just need to play every shot and not anticipate anything. Last year, we saw what can happen during the final round -- the wind blew like crazy for the final teams. The 18^th hole is key on this course. Anything can happen, and the hole location is in the same place as last year and for any tournament played here."

San José State plays the final round on Wednesday with the Aztecs and Nevada, who also shot an eight-over 296 on Tuesday.
