Las Vegas, Nev. -- The San José State offense pounded out 13 hits between the third and sixth innings and scored 11 runs on its way to its seventh run-rule win of the 2015 Mountain West schedule and an 11-3 six-inning victory over the UNLV Rebels on Friday evening.
The Spartans (32-15, 12-4 MW) reached double-digit hits for the 24th time this season and improved their record to 24-0 in those games.
Seven starters got at least one hit, but it was the top two batters in the order who got things started for the Spartans. Trailing 2-0 after two innings, Michelle Cox (3-for-4, 3 RBIs, 3R) and Jessica Madrid (2-for-4, 3 RBIs, R) took turns driving in runs in the third and fourth.
In the third, following a leadoff double from Emma Entzminger (1-for-2, 2 R) and a single by Las Vegas native and reigning Mountain West Player of the Week Nicole Schultz (2-for-2, 3 R), Cox drove in SJSU's first run on a single through the right side. Madrid followed that with a two-RBI single to put San José State ahead 3-2.
In the bottom of the inning, UNLV catcher Emily Haslinger lifted a solo shot to dead center to tie the game. It was the sixth hit, and third run in three innings off Spartans' starter Allison Lang, but over the next three she would allow just one more to the Rebels. Â
Lang would finish the game allowing seven hits and three runs in her 14th complete game of the year and improved her record to 12-8 with the win.
In the fourth Cox and Madrid kept the momentum going with some two-out lightening. After a pair of outs to open the frame, a pitch hit Entzminger and Schultz was walked. Both moved into scoring position on a balk from UNLV starter Janine Petmecky. Cox then doubled in the two and reached third standing up after an error by the Rebels right fielder. Madrid plated Cox on a shot up the middle, which ended Petmecky's evening and staked the Spartans to a 6-3.
Lang pitched around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning and in the fifth, SJSU tacked on another run. Alyssa Martinez (2-for-4, 2 RBIs, R) tripled with one out and came home on Erin Rodriguez's RBI single to make it 7-3.
In the UNLV (22-25, 8-8 MW) fifth, Lang issued a one-out walk, but on the next pitch induced a one-to-four-to-three double play to end the inning.
San José State added four more runs in the top of the sixth. Schultz and Cox singled followed by a Madrid walk to load the bases. Jessie Hufstetler (2-for-4, 2 RBIs, R) singled up the middle driving in two and ended up on second. Two batters later, Martinez laced a double down the line in left to score Madrid and Hufstetler and make the score 11-3.
Petmecky took the loss giving up six runs on seven hits and falls to 2-8 on the year.
The teams play the second game of this three game set on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
