San Jose, Calif. -- The San Jose State Spartans, the Mountain West's top hitting and run producing team, have been held to just 11 base knocks and zero runs in two games against the Colorado State Rams. On Friday, SJSU managed just five hits in a 1-0 loss to CSU.
"Today we played well defensively and our pitching was good," head coach Peter Turner said. "But, if you don't get hits with runners in scoring position, you don't get runs. We haven't done either for two games. Credit Colorado State they are making the plays when they get the opportunities."
Sharon-Renae Estrada had two of the Spartans five singles on the day. Colorado State scratched out five hits of its own with Taylor Hutton's two leading the team.
The game was 0-0 after four innings, with each squad getting a pair of hits off the other's starter.
In the fifth, Colorado State scored what would end up being the game-winning run. With two out and a runner on first, Spartans' starter Madison Fish issued a walk and moved the runner at first into scoring position. A Haley David single through the right side scored the runner from second and staked Colorado State to a 1-0 lead.
Trinity Harrington (4-3), the Rams starter, made the lead stand up, only ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, designated player Anissa Pinedo singled up the middle. Pinch hitter Erin Rodriguez singled through the right side to move the runner into scoring position, but a Nicole Schultz fly out ended the game and sent SJSU to its second straight shutout loss.
Fish's five-hit effort went by the wayside and her record drops to 12-4.
"I enjoy tight games," said Fish. "It makes me focus that much more. There is no panic in our locker room. We are too good a hitting team for this to continue. We'll keep focused on what we do and things will take care of themselves."
The Spartans and Rams wrap up its three-game series on Saturday at SJSU Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
