Tucson, Ariz. --- The San José State men's golf team shot a nine-over-par 293 in the opening round of the Mountain West Championship in Tucson, Ariz., on Friday.

The Spartans are currently in a tie for 6thplace alongside Fresno State in the 11-team, 54-hole championship lasting through Sunday. UNLV, at -11, holds a seven-stroke lead over San Diego State and Nevada in the team standings.

Landon Polterock turned in San José State's low round of the day, an even-par 71 with three birdies and three bogies. Polterock made three birdies in his first four holes, but played the final 14 holes at +2.

Cody Blick also started hot on the 7,144-yard, par 71, Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National. He shot a two-under 33 on the front nine, and birdied the par-five 10th hole to go three-under par. But a bogey on the 11th and double-bogeys on the 13th and 18th holes brought Blick's score to rest at 73 (+2).

"We are glad this is a 54-hole event," said Spartans' head coach John Kennaday. "Our guys got off to a good start, but we ran into some trouble and took some big numbers."

Matthew Ashley carded a 74 (+3), and Scott Munger and Taylor Bromley each carded a 75 (+4).

"The doubles hurt us today, but we also made a lot of birdies," Kennaday added. "Guys were making a lot of putts and that is a good sign with 36 holes left to play."

UNLV's Kurt Kitayama is the championship's 18-hole leader at -6. Nevada's Corey Eddings is close behind at -5, followed by three players tied in third place at -4.

Second-round action begins tomorrow with tee times off of the first hole starting at 7:00 a.m. PT. Live results are available via Golfstat.
