ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The San Jose State University baseball team rallied to erase a four-run deficit in the fourth inning, but New Mexico pulled away with three big innings to take the series finale, 19-8, Sunday afternoon at Lobo Field.
San Jose State (12-40, 5-22 MW) took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first, but New Mexico (27-23, 16-11 MW) answered with two of its own in the bottom half.
After the Lobos added a run in the second and three in the third, the Spartans put together a four-run rally on four hits and an error to tie the game. Dillan Smith's base hit to right field brought in Michael Breen and David Campbell with the first two runs of the inning, while Ozzy Braff's double and Shane Timmons' single capped the scoring.
Braff (3-4, three runs, two doubles, RBI, walk) and Smith (3-4, two runs, two RBIs) had big days at the plate for San Jose State, while Timmons (2-5, RBI), Joe Stefanki (2-4, RBI) and David Campbell (2-4, run) collected a pair of hits as well. Breen (1-3, run, hit by pitch) and Andre Mercurio (1-5, run) added singles.
The Spartans' 14 hits on the afternoon marked the second time in the series they reached double digits, and the 20 runs scored over the weekend is the most in any three-game set this season.Â
San Jose State returns to Municipal Stadium to close out the regular season with a Tuesday showdown with Santa Clara before hosting UNLV Thursday through Saturday.
