San Francisco, Calif. --- San José State men's golf All-American, five-time PGA Tour winner and SJSU Hall of Famer Roger Maltbie is now a 2015 Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame inductee.
Maltbie joins former Golden State Warriors owner Jonny Moseley, broadcast executive Franklin Mieuli, Dusty Baker and Barry Bonds in this year's group of inductees.
"I'm very pleased and humbled to be included," Maltbie said on the KNBR Hooked On Golf Show on May 9. "The first thing I thought of is am I in the same Hall of Fame as Willie Mays? To be included is a thrill of a lifetime."
The San Jose, Calif., native turned pro in 1972 following his All-American season at SJSU when he was the California State Amateur Champion and top-25 finisher at the NCAA Championship.
"San Jose State - they have a wonderful legacy in golf," said Maltbie. "We were so close (in 1972). We finished in the top-10 at the NCAA's. We had a young golfer in Mark Lye. He redshirted. If we had Mark, we might have made a run at it (the championship) then."
He went on to capture five PGA Tour victories including the 1985 World Series of Golf, and was a three-time winner of the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf event on the Champions Tour.
Maltbie joined NBC Sports as the on-course reporter and analyst in 1991. His signature green-side golf whisper and color analysis can be heard today in his 24th year of PGA Tour and Champions Tour coverage.
Maltbie is the ninth San José State Spartan to be inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. He joins Ken Venturi (1984) and Juli Inkster (2011) as SJSU golf inductees.
