Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. --- San José State's Cody Blick shot a five-over-par 77 competing as an individual in the opening round of the NCAA Regional Championship hosted at The Farms Golf Club.
Blick, playing in his third NCAA Regional, shot a 39 (+3) on the front nine that included one birdie, one bogey and an eight on the par-five third hole. Blick came in with a 38 (+2) on the backside to give him a 77 (+5) for the day.
"He's hitting the ball well and putting the ball well," said Spartans' head coach John Kennaday. "We ran into a little trouble today on a very tough hole, but Cody will bounce back from this. He is not out of it."
Blick is tied for 47th place with 36 holes remaining at the 6,947-yard, par 72 course at The Farms Golf Club. The top five teams and the leading individual not a member of those teams will advance to the NCAA Championship in Bradenton, Fla., on May 29-June 3.
"Part of it is just getting to know this golf course," Kennaday added. "The mistakes today just ended up in the wrong place. He'll bounce back tomorrow."
Oklahoma's Grant Hirschman, East Tennessee State's Gudmundur Kristjansson and Wichita State's Grant Bennet all shot 69 (-3) to end up in a three-way tie for first after round one.
Blick's round-two tee time is set for 9:50 a.m. PT off of the 10th hole. Fans can follow along with live scoring updates provided by Golfstat.
