San José State freshman, Kelsey Johnson-Upshaw, became the first woman to be a conference long jump champion in the history of the two-year program. Johnson-Upshaw, a freshman from Arlington, Texas, jumped 5.94 meters on her final attempt to become the 2015 Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track and Field long jump champion.
"On the last jump I just got that feeling that I know what I have to do, and just go for it," Johnson-Upshaw said. "At first I was a little disappointed. I wanted to jump further. Once everybody was done I was just relieved and happy to have won the event."
The distance eclipsed her previous season-best of 5.86 meters which she jumped at the Longhorn Invitational (5/2).
"We were hovering right around fifth place, and then she really put it together on the final jump," said Spartans' head coach Jeff Petersmeyer. "I think she just likes the pressure of the late rounds."
Johnson-Upshaw's victory earned San José State 10 team points. Cambree Harbaugh finished fifth to give the Spartans an additional four points.Â
