Third-Round Pairings

Tucson, Ariz. --- Cody Blick and Scott Munger each shot an even-par 71 and the San José State men's golf team went +5 in the second round of the Mountain West Championship on Saturday in Tucson, Ariz.

The Spartans' 289 in round two puts them at +14 overall and in seventh place with 18 holes remaining.

"These guys are playing tough," said San José State head coach John Kennaday. "It's like a lot of times this year where we play well but just can't quite crack the code."

It seemed that Munger had cracked the code when he made three birdies on his back nine leading to a 34 (-2). His 71 Saturday moved him into a tie for 25th on the individual leaderboard at +4.

Similar to yesterday's round, Blick was cruising at -2 through 11 holes, with birdies on the eighth, 10th and 11th. But a bogey on the 13th and 16th holes brought Blick's score back to even par where he would finish. At +2 for the championship, he is the Spartans' low-man through 36 holes in a tie for 16th place.

For the second day in a row, just a few big numbers hurt SJSU.

Landon Polterock took a seven on the par four 11th hole, but was otherwise even-par on his round. His 74 (+3) Saturday brings his two-round total to 145 (+3), good for 20th place.

Matthew Ashley carded five birdies, but as many bogies and a double-bogey on the second hole gave him a second-round 73 (+2). Taylor Bromley's 76 (+5) included a pair of doubles.

"We've been getting closer and closer all year," Kennaday said. "We are due for a good score and it wouldn't surprise me if they did it tomorrow. Hopefully we can do a little better at taking advantage of the low winds early on."

UNLV increased its lead to eight shots with an eight-under 276 in round two. Nevada is second at -11, and San Diego State third, at -8. The Rebels' Kurt Kitayama is the 36-hole individual leader at -12.

The final round of the championship on the 7,114-yard, par 71, Catalina Course at OMNI Tucson National takes place tomorrow morning with tee times off of the first hole beginning at 7:00 a.m. PT. Live stats will be available via Golfstat.
