May 27, 2015 Indianapolis, Ind.----- San Jose State University's all-time department high Academic Progress Rate (APR) multi-year score is the highlight of its accomplishments detailed in the NCAA's annual APR report.
Covering the 2011 through 2014 academic years, the Spartans' 16 NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics teams representing approximately 400 student-athletes produced a multi-year score of 976 out of 1,000. The gain of 20 points from the 2011 report is meaningful and the 51-point increase from the 2009 report is very significant.
"We are proud of the overall academic performance by our student-athletes. Our academic support staff and our coaches deserve credit for their roles in our student-athletes' pursuit of a degree," says Gene Bleymaier, San Jose State University's director of athletics.
The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention. The highest possible score is 1,000 and a 930 score projects to approximately a 50 percent Graduation Success Rate according to NCAA data experts.
Six Spartan programs had an all-time best APR score; 11 scored 975 or higher; and 14 out of 16 improved year-over-year according to this year's NCAA report.
Men's cross country, which received a NCAA Public Recognition Award for its 1,000 multi-year score, football, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's soccer and women's tennis are the San Jose State University NCAA Division I sports programs with an all-time best since the APR became the NCAA's primary academic success measurement in 2003.
Football's 975 score continued its impressive decade-long trend of APR improvement. San Jose State now has the second highest APR score among the seven Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools in California. Only Stanford's 987 is higher. UCLA matches San Jose State at 975. For the fourth consecutive report, San Jose State's APR score in football is ahead of California State University system schools San Diego State (964) and Fresno State (949). The University of Southern California (948) and the University of California (941) are the other two FBS schools in the state.
Women's cross country (991), women's soccer (990), women's tennis (984) and women's basketball (966) are four more Spartan teams with all-time best APR scores.
Women's water polo (996), women's gymnastics (995), women's golf (992), women's swimming and diving (989), women's volleyball (983), softball (979) and men's golf (973) are six more San Jose State programs with scores of 970 or better.
Baseball (962), men's soccer (945) and men's basketball (934) complete the list of Spartans' NCAA Division I sponsored sports with updated APR multi-year scores. Men's basketball, baseball, men's cross country, men's golf, women's golf, women's gymnastics, women's soccer, women's tennis and women's water polo are nine sports with single-year APR figures of 1,000 for 2013-14 that factored into the current report.
