San Jose, Calif. -- Michelle Cox, a senior outfielder on the San José State softball team, is a Capital One Academic All-America® Division I second-team honoree. As voted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) membership, the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America Softball Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Cox is the University's second softball player to earn the award, joining Roz Rios who was named a third-team honoree in both 1990 and 1991. In addition, she is the 18th student-athlete from San José State to receive the honor since the comprehensive program was instituted in 1952.
Among 289 NCAA Division I schools which are eligible to nominate student-athletes for softball, Cox is one of 34 players to achieve this national recognition and will be one of 816 student-athletes to receive Academic All-America® honors this year.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution, have played in at least 50 percent of his/her team's games and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Cox, a senior from Sydney, Australia is a four-year starter from in right field and has a 3.78 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in business administration. She earned Capital One Academic All-District VIII first-team selection last year and is a three-time Academic all-conference selection; twice while competing in the Western Athletic Conference (2012 & 2013) and once in the Mountain West (2014). The 2015 Mountain West academic honors have yet to be announced. In addition, Cox is a three-time a San José State Scholar-Athlete and earned Mountain West Scholar Athlete designation last year.
In 2015, Cox broke an 18 year-old career program record for runs scored and finished her career ranked in the top-10 of San José State softball history for batting average, on-base percentage, steals, steal percentage, total bases, slugging percentage, at bats and triples.
This year she led the team in at-bats, runs, triples and steals. She was second in hits, third in batting average and on-base percentage, fifth in slugging percentage and is fifth in doubles.
Cox is the only Mountain West softball student-athlete to earn 2015 Capital One Academic All-America honors.
