Final Stats

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- San Jose State's baseball team saw Cal Poly strike three times in the bottom of the second inning and never look back, as the Spartans dropped a 5-1 decision Tuesday night at Baggett Stadium.

San Jose State (12-37) had to settle for a split in the season series with the Mustangs (22-23), after the Spartans had triumphed by a score of 7-3 at Municipal Stadium in early March.

Cal Poly starter Jarred Zill kept the Spartans off balance all night, scattering four hits in his 6.0 innings while allowing the lone run. The Mustang bullpen was even better, however, as Michael Gomez and Danny Zandona combined to face one over the minimum in the last three frames.

Tuesday night, the Spartans used eight different pitchers, four of whom tossed 0.1 innings or less. Carter Johnson (0-3) made his third consecutive midweek start for the Spartans. Johnson went 2.0 innings and gave up three runs on six hits, all of which occurred in the second inning.

Ross Slaney took over in the third and worked 3.1 innings, yielding one run and scattering two hits while walking one and fanning five. The junior right-hander retired the first seven Mustangs he faced.

Dylan Sugimoto, Jeremiah Wylie, Josh Goldberg, Jake Swiech, Jonathan Hernandez and Myles Richard also saw time on the mound Tuesday night.

At the dish, Chris Williams drove in San Jose State's only run of the game when he doubled into the right center gap to score Brett Bautista from first in the top of the fourth. Williams (1-4, double, RBI) and Bautista (1-4, run) accounted for half the Spartans' offense on the night, with Dillan Smith (1-3) and Kyle Morrison (1-3) adding hits.

Ozzy Braff saw his streaks of reaching base safely in 11 consecutive games and hitting safely in 10 come to end with an 0-for-4.

The Spartans play their last regular season road games of the season this weekend when they visit New Mexico.
