Albuquerque, N.M. -- In the finale of her collegiate career, pitcher Madison Fish tossed a one-hit gem and the San José State bats awoke after a day of slumber to defeat the New Mexico Lobos 8-0 in five innings at Lobo Softball Field.
Fish, who finishes the season with a team-best and career-high 16 wins, issued a leadoff walk followed by a single in the first, but left the runners right where they were by inducing three outs in her next 10 pitches.
In the second Fish gave up a two-out walk and then set down 10 straight. She struck out five on the day including all three in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
The Spartans offense, which managed just five hits in a 14-0 loss on Friday, pounded out 11 and scored eight runs against New Mexico (29-25, 13-11 MW) starter Carrie Sheehan in four and two thirds.
The 11 hits mark the 30th time in 2015 that San José State reached double digits. In those game the Spartans were 28-2.
SJSU (37-19, 17-7 MW) got the scoring going in the second with a crooked number on two-out lightening.
With two away, Emma Entzminger walked and came all the way around to score on a Nicole Schultz (2-for-3, 2 RBIs, 2 R) RBI double. Michelle Cox then picked up a bunt single on which Schultz went to third. A steal of second by Cox set up Jessica Madrid for a two-RBI double to left center to make it a 3-0 Spartans lead. It was Madrid's 19th double of the season and her team-leading 79th hit of the year.
In the top of the fourth, Entzminger crushed a 3-2 pitch down the left field line for the first home run of her collegiate career. She finished the day 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs and after three and a half the Spartans led 4-0.
In the fifth, San José State put the game away with four hits and four runs. With runners on first and second, Entzminger roped a double to center, which plated a run and left runners on second and third.
Schultz followed Entzminger with an RBI single of her own to make it 6-0. After Schultz stole second to put two in scoring position, Cox doubled them both in for the final total of 8-0.
The game marked the conclusion of seven Spartan seniors. Cox, who was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, Fish, Allison Lang, Schultz, Sharon-Renae Estrada (2-for-3), Kryn Masutani and Marissa Toy.
The season also saw nine offensive records fall as well as one pitching record. The Spartans set new marks for hits (534), runs (357), RBIs (325), walks (229), batting average (.350), slugging percentage (.482), on-base percentage (.445), total bases (735), hit by pitch (48) and saves (8).
