Freshman long jumper Kelsey Johnson-Upshaw and junior men's golfer Cody Blick are the May Spartan Foundation Student-Athletes of the Month, presented by ScholarShare.
Johnson-Upshaw became San José State's first conference champion in the short two-year history of the women's track and field program with a victory in the Mountain West Championship long jump. The Arlington, Texas native took first place with a 5.94 meter jump on her third and final attempt. The Spartans got 10 team points from Johnson-Upshaw's win, and she also contributed two points as a member of SJSU's 4x100-relay team. Prior to the championship, Johnson-Upshaw was San José State's top-finisher in the 100-meter dash at the Longhorn Invitational.
Blick notched his sixth top-10 finish of the season at the Mountain West Championship, and advanced to his third NCAA Regional Championship in as many years during the month of May. The Danville, Calif., native fired a 66 (-5) in the final round of the MW Championship to surge into the top-10. Following the tournament he was announced as an All-Mountain West Team honoree. Blick was selected to compete as an individual in the NCAA Regional Championship in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., where he ended his season with a 40th place finish. Blick has now made it to an NCAA Regional in all three of his seasons as a Spartan.
