Olympia Fields, Ill. -- San José State University men's golfer Cody Blick shot an opening-round 69 (-1) at the 115th U.S. Amateur Championship for an 18th place tie after 18 holes.

The 312-player field, which features 16 players who have already played either a major championship or a PGA Tour event this year, are vying for a top-64 spot to advance to the match-play bracket, starting on Wednesday, August 19.

Playing on the 7,234 yard, par-70 North Course, which played more difficult than the South Course (74.506 stroke average versus 73.295), Blick made the turn at one-under making birdies on the 4th and 5th holes before bogeying on the 7th. On the back nine, he opened up with a birdie-bogey on the 10th and 11th holes before settling down with seven consecutive pars to finish his round.

The Danville, Calif., native is six strokes back of leader Matt NeSmith from North Augusta, S.C. who shot 5-under 65.

The second-round tee time for Blick is Tuesday at 6:50 a.m. PT on the South Course.

Blick qualified for the U.S. Amateur for the second year in a row at a qualifying event held last month at the Bayonet Black Horse Golf Club (Bayonet Course) in Seaside, Calif. finishing first among 72 participants.

In last year's U.S. Amateur, Blick missed advancing to the top 64 match round play by two strokes.
