MPSF Preseason Ranking No Concern To Spartans

Aug. 25, 2015

With the revival of the men's water polo team at San Jose State University, the Spartans ranking in the preseason Mountain Pacific Sports Federation coaches' poll doesn't worry head coach Bruce Watson.

"We are excited to be in the best collegiate men's water polo conference in the nation, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation," Watson said. "Being 10th in the first poll means we have nowhere to go but up."

The season marks the first time the Spartans have played men's water polo since 1981. Watson still has 25 student-athletes competing for 20 roster positions.

"It is very early in our inaugural season, and we are improving each day, the players are working very hard to be as competitive as possible in our first year in the MPSF," Watson said. "We are laying the ground work for the team to improve each season.

Ranked first in the conference's preseason poll is defending NCAA champion UCLA, followed by USC, California, Stanford, Pacific, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara, UC, Irvine, Pepperdine and San Jose State.

"Our first year will be very valuable for our young team and their future development and their learning process," said the Spartans head coach.

San José State opens its inaugural season at The Aquatics Center against Santa Clara University on September 5 at 12:00 p.m.
