Final Stats UC Riverside Match
San Jose, Calif.--Opening the 2015 season by hosting the San José State Invitational, the San José State volleyball team fell to Cal Poly, 3-1, and UC Riverside, 3-2, on the first day of the tournament at Spartan Gym.
In the first match of the season, the Spartans won the first set against Cal Poly, 25-22, before the Mustangs rebounded to win the next three sets, 25-20, 25-15, 25-18. Three Spartans recorded double-digit kills, led by Nandyala Gama with 12, and followed by Sara Hibbs and Giulia Gávio with 10 each. Three players recorded a team-best 11 digs -- Hana Tresnáková, Breann Robinson and Luiza Andrade. Robinson had the first double-double of the season with 38 assists to go with her 11 digs.
In the night match, San José State jumped out to a 2-0 lead against UC Riverside, winning the first two sets 25-22 and 25-23. The Spartans fought hard in the third set with three lead changes and six tied scores before the Highlanders won 25-23. UCR then won the final two sets, 25-16 and 15-7.
Hibbs led the team with 14 kills and four blocks, while Gama added 12 kills. Yavianliz Rosado recorded a team-best 19 digs, while Andrade added 16 digs. Roy added seven kills and four blocks, two solo and two assists.
The Spartans had a strong serving presence in the match with 10 service aces. Jamie Hirai and Andrade each had three aces, while Tresnáková and Allison Meehan had two aces a piece.
The San José State Invitational continues on Saturday with three matches. The Spartans face Sacramento State at 11 a.m., followed by the Hornets and Cal Poly at 3 p.m., and SJSU and Weber State at 7 p.m. All three matches take place in Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets. Admission is free to all matches.
