Sacramento, Calif. --- It took San Jose State less than four minutes to score its first goal Sunday, and then it took Darriell Franklin less than four minutes to answer Sacramento State's equalizer with the game-winning goal which led to a 2-1 Spartan victory.
Frankln received a pass and finished it inside the far post to put SJSU ahead 2-1 in the 55th minute. The ball traveled from one side of the pitch to the other on the scoring play, as Zoe Makrigiannis kicked it from the Spartan goal to a streaking Dorthe Hoppius. Both Hoppius and Makrigiannis were credited with assists.
The game-winner was Franklin's second goal in as many matches.
"We're starting to find our rhythm a little bit, especially on the attack," said Spartans' head coach Lauren Hanson. "I'm just proud of the team for competing through another long and tough weekend on the road."
Maricruz Chapa got San Jose State (2-1-1) out to a hot start with her second goal of the season in just the fourth minute of play. Chapa scored on a free kick from the top of the box that went past the keeper on the left side.
"We created good opportunities on goal again today," Hanson said. "We are starting to put some good soccer together. Now I want to see us do it for a full 90 minutes."
The Spartans edged the Hornets (0-3-0) in the shots column, 12-10. Eight of the 12 for SJSU were on goal, and Hornets goalkeeper Destiny Butcher made six saves. Makrigiannis for the Spartans was credited with three saves.
