The San José State Spartans men's water polo team kept pace with UC Davis in the first half, losing to the Aggies 10-3.
The No. 14 ranked Spartan (1-1) scored first on a goal by sophomore Igor Miljan at 7:10 in the opening period. Ranked No. 12, the Aggies (3-2) quickly answer back with a shot from Sasa Antunovic 21 seconds later.
Finding the back of the cage, Cory Laidig gave UC Davis the lead with less than a minute to go in the first period.
Freshman Justin Contreras responded immediately for the Spartans on a strike with 40 second left, tying the match 2-2 to conclude the first.
San José State kept the score tight, giving up a goal midway in the second period to UC Davis' Lyle Kipp. The Aggies lead 3-2 at halftime.
The Spartans' sophomore goalkeeper Matej Matijevic had 10 saves by halftime, finishing with 15 on the day. Matijevic has 34 saves this season. In addition, freshman Adam Sandor had 2 saves in four minutes of action.
Adding a goal in the final period for SJSU, Contreras led the Spartans with two goals in the match with six goals on the season. Miljan's score raises his goal count to three goals in two matches.
Antunovic led UC Davis with three goals, scoring twice in the third period as the Aggies went on a 7-0 scoring run in the second half.
The Aggies' goalkeeper Spencer Creed had 11 saves, six in the second half.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday and Sunday, September 19-20, competing in the NorCal Invitational at Stanford University. SJSU opens the tournament versus No. 3 California at 10:50 a.m. on Saturday at the Avery Aquatic Center.
