SAN JOSE, Calif. â€" San José State's women's tennis team will send three players â€" Marie Klocker, Gaelle Rey and Sybille Gauvain â€" to this weekend's Battle of the Bay in San Francisco.
The four-day event runs Thursday through Sunday at the California Tennis Club and marks the first time San José State has earned an invitation to the tournament. The competition will also be the first presided over by Spartans head coach Chad Skorupka since being elevated to the position this summer.
The Battle of the Bay, hosted by the University of San Francisco, is one of the top fall tournaments on the West Coast and also features entrants from USC, Pacific, Cal and Pepperdine.
The singles main draw will operate on a best of three tiebreak sets with no-ad scoring format, while doubles will feature one eight-game proset with no-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreak at 7-7. First-match losers in the singles main draw will fall to the consolation bracket, while main draw winners beyond the first round and the entire doubles bracket will be single elimination.
In the singles bracket, Klocker and Rey will take on USF's Thyra Taune and Hanna Borjeson, respectively, while Gauvain will face USC's Meredith Xepoleas, the draw's No. 2 overall seed. On the doubles side, Klocker and Rey will square off with Shanna Dos Santos (USF) and Alexandra Letzt (USC), with Gauvain teaming with Pacific's Cristina Saenz De Buruaga and taking on Cal's duo of Lyann Hoang and Karla Popovic.
Singles action will begin Thursday at 4:00 p.m. and doubles will kick off Friday morning at 9:00 a.m., with singles following.
