Spartans Dominant On Day One Of Battle In The Bay

Sept. 17, 2015

SAN FRANCISCO - Marie Klocker, Gaelle Rey and Sybille Gauvain of the San José State women's tennis team got off to a fast start in the opening round of the Battle in the Bay Classic Thursday afternoon.

Klocker got down 5-1 to USF's Thyra Taune early in the first set before storming back to take the next six games. Klocker would go on to capture the second set, 6-2, to win in straight sets.

Rey was dominant throughout her matchup with Hanna Borjeson, Taune's teammate, and secured a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Gauvain joined Klocker and Rey in the quarterfinals after being credited with a walkover when her scheduled opponent, Meredith Xepoleas of USC, withdrew from the tournament due to illness.

"Today was a very good start on the first day," Spartans head coach Chad Skorupka said. "It was good to see Marie bounce back from a slow start and win in straight sets. Gaelle got off to a real fast start and was able to keep her focus and win in straight sets as well."

When doubles action kicks off Friday morning at 9:00 a.m., Klocker and Rey will square off with Shanna Dos Santos (USF) and Alexandra Letzt (USC), with Gauvain teaming with Pacific's Cristina Saenz De Buruaga and taking on Cal's duo of Lyann Hoang and Karla Popovic.

Following doubles play, Rey and Gauvain will go head to head in quarterfinal singles action and Klocker will look to upend the nation's 36th-ranked singles player and No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, Madison Westby of USC.
